Portrait Sketching Competition

Hey! I'm participating in an portrait sketching competition next week in NYC at the Grand Central Academy. If you're in the city you should come by! and if not, the GCA's facebook page will be adding pictures of the portraits daily.

Here are the details (from the GCA blog):

In this competition, ten portrait painters will compete over three days to paint six portraits. The painters will paint each portrait in a single, four-hour session working from the same model.  A panel will judge the portraits as a group and award First and Second Place winners with prizes of $1,000 and $500, respectively.

The finalists are: Daniel Bilmes, Matthew James Collins, Kerry Dunn, Danny Ferland, David Gray, Greg Mortenson, Rick Piloco, Cesar Santos, Matthew Tarini and Joseph Todorovitch.

The event will be open to the public for daily lunch-hour viewings and for an Awards Party on the last day:

Plein Air Sketches

The paintings in the top picture are from the Collingwood, Ontario area and the ones below are from Alberta and Victoria, BC. Most of them are done in under 2 hours. It was a serious challenge to do the sunset paintings and to paint when it was raining and foggy.

Most of these are 5 x 8 inches. The trees on the right is 6 x 8 inches.

Three 5 x 8 inches and  one 6 x 9 inches. The mountain is Lake Agnes, right up the hill from Lake Louise.
